By Steve A. Hamilton Genesis 5:21-24 Introduction: Contained in four verses, we have the account of the life of Enoch. There are only three other passages in the Bible that refer to him (Luke 3:37; Heb. 11:5; Jude 14-15). The only other person who God took that never saw death was Elijah. Enoch must have been one of the most righteous men to ever step foot on the earth. Wouldn’t it be good to know everything we could about this person? I. Relatively speaking, Enoch lived a short life. A. Enoch only lived 365 years. Nearly everyone else who lived before the flood lived roughly 900 years. He was a young man when God took him. B. However, we cannot conclude that there wasn’t much to say about him. If anything, he lived such a godly life perhaps a chronicle of his life would put us to shame. II. Enoch walked with God (Gen. 5:24). A. That statement reveals the character of Enoch. By comparison, Noah was described as a perfect man (Gen. 6:9); yet, God did not take Noah. B. To walk with God means he kept himself in agreement with God. 1. Amos asked, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed” (Amos 3:3)? 2. God does not walk with sinners (Isa. 59:1-2; 2 Cor. 6:14-15). C. To walk with God means to live blameless (Gen. 17:1). We can not have fellowship with God by walking in darkness (1 John 1:6-7). III. Enoch was well pleasing to God (Heb. 11:5). A. No one can please God without faith (Heb. 11:6). B. Could you think of a better statement if it were made about you? Yet, how many people believe statements like “he was the richest person who ever lived” as a better statement. No matter what we achieve on earth, it will have no affect on our salvation unless we were well pleasing to God. IV. Enoch was a servant of God (Jude 14-15). A. Obviously, Enoch was a prophet who lived among ungodly people. B. His only recorded message was that of judgment to come (Matt. 25:31-33, 46). Conclusion: God has always rewarded the faithful, but He will also convict those of sin when He returns. Enoch desired to bring others to God. Will you heed his warning? |
