Demons

By Steve A. Hamilton

Introduction: A 1990 Gallup poll claimed that 55 percent of respondents believe in Satan while 49 percent say they thought people are sometimes possessed by him.  Demons and evil spirits certainly have people’s attention in our society.

Hollywood puts out their many tales of such spirits which likely aids in the numbers just stated.  But as Christians, do we have a basis to believe in demons?

I. Obviously real beings

          A. Present in the 1st century.

                   1. Intelligent and able to speak (Luke 4:33-37).

                   2. Knew Christ and Paul (Mark 1:34; Luke 4:41; Acts 19:15).

                   3. They tremble showing emotion (Jas. 2:19).

                    4. Tormented showing suffering (Luke 8:27-28ff).

          B. Demons connected to idolatry throughout time (Lev. 17:7; Deut. 32:17; 2 Chron. 11:15; 1 Cor. 10:19-21) and false doctrine (1 Tim. 4:1-3). Catholics take note.

          C. Demons possessed people (Matt. 17:18; Mark 7:25-30; 16:9; Luke 4:33-37; 9:38-42).

          D. Some had supernatural powers (Acts 16:16-18; Luke 8:29).

          E. Demons are evil and associated with the devil (Luke 8:2; 13:10-17; Matt. 12:45).

II. The exorcist of demon possession:

          A. Showed the power of God (Matt. 12:22-28; Luke 11:14-20).

          B. Served to confirm the word (Mark 16:8-20).

          C. However, others were able to exercise demons (Mark 9:38-40; Luke 9:49-50; Matt. 7:22-23; 12:27).

III. Are demons present today? (My suppositions.)

          A. At one time demons roamed the earth but now they are being reserved for judgment (Rev. 12:9; Jude 6; 2 Pet. 2:4).

          B. That is not to say they won’t return for a short time (Rev. 20:1-3ff).

Conclusion: As fascinating as demons might be, we must not lose our focus (1 Pet. 5:8-9).  Satan and his forces of evil will do anything to devour you.  Don’t think you can withstand him without God.  You’ll need a strong faith and a willingness to suffer in order to find the strength in Christ that you’ll need to make it through life.
